The Lephoi Centre is located in Francistown, Botswana. It is a residential hostel for about 50 children who are totally blind or who have seriously impaired vision.
The children range from 8 to 18 years old. They learn Braille, and when they are ready they are integrated as far as possible with other schoolchildren at the same educational level.
Music is a major part of life at Lephoi. The children take lessons in marimba, keyboard, percussion, and especially singing. “We will sing,” they say, “till one day the birds stop in midair. That is our dream.”
Lephoi is the Setswana word for “dove,” a symbol of God’s peace. The center intends to be a place of harmony for all the children placed in its care.
The hostel is administered by the Botswana Synod of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa.
