The Tibetan Children’s Village is one of the largest agencies serving Tibetan refugees in India. It assists more the 15,000 needy Tibetan children in five main villages and seven residential schools in Dharamsala and other locations in India.
More than 100,000 Tibetan refugees fled their homeland after the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Even today, thousands of Tibetans continue to flee to India. The Tibetan Children’s Village cares for orphaned and destitute children among them.
The children are provided with group homes, schools, and vocational training. At the same time, they are given an understanding of the rich cultural heritage of Tibet.
Education there has been effective. Some 200 students complete their education annually. Several current staff members were once themselves students: math and science teachers; a principal; a school nurse; and the resident physician. In all, 60 per cent of the staff are former students.
The hope is to enable the children to grow and develop as naturally as possible while maintaining their culture. The village operates a day school, technical schools, handicraft programs and a dairy farm.
