The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre in Darjeeling, India, was established in 1959 to meet the needs of refugees from Tibet, including both families and abandoned and orphaned children. Since its beginning, the Centre has cared for more than 500 orphans. Children at the Centre can be sponsored for $25 a month.
You can show your interest in this center or in sponsoring a child here, by sending us a note in the text box below.
While adults are trained to produce carpets and other handicrafts, the children are cared for from birth. Day care for infants is provided in the “crèche” while their mothers work. A nursery school teaches pre-school children, and the older children attend the Central School for Tibetans in Darjeeling. Qualified graduates are sent to various colleges.
Activities such as sports days, basketball games, and dancing help students develop well-rounded lives.
From birth to college all the Centre’s children are clothed, fed, sheltered, educated, and given medical care by the Centre.
